While the RCMP have declined to release the name of the person found dead on Bowen Island last week, Global TV and The Vancouver Sun, have. Those media and others say that the body was that of 19-year-old Mitchell Gallivan.
The RCMP said that Gallivan's death is not suspicious and that no foul play was involved. They said he was a resident of Vancouver but have not said how he died or how it was he came to be on Bowen Island. They are awaiting toxicology reports.
His next-of-kin have been notified of the tragedy and Sgt. Jennifer Pound of the RCMP said that the young man had been reported missing by his family in October of 2011. Gallivan, who the Sun reports had completed one-year of study in the UBC engineering department, was found in bushes by a local resident on Harding Road in a rural area of Bowen on Friday, May 18.
Body not connected to Jodi Henrickson
Bowen RCMP detachment head Cpl. Nancy Joyce said that the death is not related in any way to the case of Jodi Henrickson, a missing teenage girl, then 17, who went missing on Bowen on June 20, 2009. That case is being treated as s homicide though her body has never been found.
Bowen Island is a small community off approximately 3500 residents off of the coast of West Vancouver. There's a ferry that services the island hourly, the trip is about 20 minutes.
