Jessica Sanchez and Philip Philips have set a new record for American Idol after host Ryan Seacrest announced it has received 132 million votes from online TV viewers during the show finale held at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, California
Philip Philips, the 21-year-old singer from Leesburg, Georgia was declared winner of the current season of American Idol.
Jessica Sanchez, the 16-year old Filipino/Mexican-American singing sensation who was voted off by online voters in one of the episodes of the show but later saved by judges, was declared this year's runner-up
Sanchez and fellow finalist Philip Philips performed in the final episode for the hearts and votes of millions of online viewers Wednesday at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, California.
Philips and Sanchez rendered three songs each for the judges with Sanchez emerging as the winner in the first round. In round two judge Tyler voted for Sanchez while Lopez went for Philips. Randy Jackson voted for both finalists which resulted in an even round.
The third round went to Phillips for his rendition of "Home", a mixed-style rock -ballad which earn him the night's standing ovation.
In an online poll covering 18,000 votes, Jessica Sanchez leads Philips with 62% but the poll include international viewers but technically they're not supposed to be voting.
Sanchez' preliminary poll result giving her an edge over Philips did not appear to be the result of the actual voting as host Ryan Seacrest Ryan Seacrest told the audience in the show finale Philips is the new "America Idol" winner.

American Idol has been dominated by male winners since 2007 when the 17-year-old contestant Jordin Sparks grabbed the American Idol crown.
Some of the finalists who graced the show include Joshua Ledet, Skyler Laine and Fantasia Barrino. Ledet, who finished third, did Elton John's "Take Me To The Pilot"
Other contestants in the top 12 also performed in groups.
