Several hundred protestors attended a rally outside Sydney Town Hall to put pressure on the Australian government to recognise same sex marriages.
The rally was organised by Community Action Against Homophobia (CAAH) and took place at 1pm on Saturday, 12 May 2012. Several speakers spoke to the crowd.
The Facebook group for the event had 869 people down as ‘going’ and 281 as ‘maybe’. Another 4,984 had been invited.

A solitary, vocal, rival protestor was shouting, “break down the family unit”, “same sex parenting”, “gay rights”, and “divide and conquer!”
At about 1:45pm, following the rally outside Town Hall, the protestors marched towards Oxford Street, which is famous for being the gay centre of Sydney and is where the annual
Mardi Gras takes place.

The marchers held a large rainbow flag across the street. They chanted “Julia Gillard, ALP, we demand equality!”, “Gay, straight, black, white, marriage is a civil right!”, “Homophobia’s got to go, hey, hey, ho, ho!” ALP stands for Australian Labor Party, which is the political party currently in government in Australia, led by Prime Minister Julia Gillard.
Signs held by the protestors included “Two rings do make a right”, “Smash Homophobia – Socialist Alternative”, “Campus equal love – marry me please”, “Sydney Atheists”, “Make NSW an equal marriage state”
The march stopped along Oxford Street to hold a ‘wedding’.

On the same day from 2:30pm,
another rally took place outside the Kings Cross police station to protest against the police shooting of two Aboriginal teenagers.
