Sarah Cooper, American University graduate, received more than just her diploma on her graduation day. Sam Miller, fellow graduate and boyfriend since her freshman year, proposed marriage with a diamond engagement ring.
As the graduate of Public Affairs walked away from the stage after receiving her diploma, Miller proposed. Cooper hadn't been expecting it, but she managed to say "Yes" and embraced her fiance. The crowd at the graduation appreciated a bit of romance to liven up a graduation ceremony. The hall broke into cheers and applause as the couple held each other and kissed, and Miller slipped the ring onto Cooper's finger.
The Huffington Post reports Miller said: "I knew that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with Sarah about three months into our relationship. I chose to propose on stage at her graduation because I don’t want to wait another minute for her to be my fiancee."
American University posted a video of the special moment to YouTube. According to the University: "As American University School of Public Affairs graduates walked across the stage to accept their diplomas, graduate Sarah Cooper got the surprise of a lifetime. In addition to the excitement of being a new graduate, Cooper is now newly engaged to School of Communication graduate Sam Miller. He proposed on stage in front of family and classmates."
The Daily What reports that the couple had promised their families they would wait until after graduation to get engaged.
