A young Indian couple who were interrupted in their attempts to bury their month and a half old baby girl alive, have been arrested. The couple were following the advice of a local godman.
Bharati Rani and her husband Dinesh Kumar had already lost one child to an incurable illness. They fell under the influence of a godman who told them that if they buried their infant daughter alive, the act would protect their other children from illnesses.
According to UP the couple were interrupted by a trustee of the graveyard who caught them, together with Kumar's brother, as they attempted to carry out their macabre act.
NDTV reported that the baby girl was rescued from her grave and taken to the hospital, very much alive. Police have not yet located the godman.
The incident occurred in the same week that female infanticide has garnered much attention in India. Emirates 247 reported a Bollywood actor drew attention to the issue on national television.
