What happens when eight enthusiastic, passionate and energetic women come together to join and form a team? We get a power packed squad of women from different professions amalgamating into one Creative Team named as ‘Shakti’. Sneha Vedula, Deepti Mohta, Shilpa Mehendale, Madhavi Kadiyala, Ratnmala Vanka, Prabha Malempati, Rama Saripalle and Manasa Rao are all residents of Silicon Valley for more than ten years and have come together with a mission to avidly support Women’s Influence and Contribution to the Family and Society at large.
May 6th 2012, was beaming with the glory of women power in the Bay area at India Community Center, Milpitas, CA where an exclusive “Women-only” event called “Shakti 2012
” was organized. This event was marked to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of International Women’s Day with a theme- “women connections”. The event featured talented women artists, future women entrepreneurs, esteemed women leaders who were supported and applauded for their achievements by approximately 550 equally passionate and impressive women supporters of different ethnicities.
The objective of the event was to create a platform for women from different walks of life to connect with each other as well as showcase their talents, share their achievements and motivate more such women in the process.
The most unique aspect of this event was that it only extended its invitation to women above the age of 21! This speaks volumes about the primary motive of the organizers which was to encourage women to take out time from their busy schedules of carrying out several important roles and responsibilities on personal and professional front and to celebrate womanhood by participating and showcasing their hidden passions, beauty, art and strength.
The pre-event social networking hour was abuzz with women from all walks of life showing support for “Help a cause that helps women”. These women were ones who held a ‘business bazaar’ to promote their products in the form of Henna stalls, Clothing outlet and Jewelry showcase.
The Highlights of the show were Artistic Performances by women from different genres, the rocking musical extravaganza by ‘the first time women-only musical band’ led by young budding artist Bharathi Palivela and the dazzling Shakti Royals Pageant which laid strong emphasis on not only beauty but also talent showcased by the participants. The Beauty pageant was judged by Ranna Patel, Priya Gandhi, Madhuri Kishore and Kimi DeLeonbius, each of whom is a renowned contributor in the field of art.
Few other specials were, the theme music of Shakti 2012, which was composed by Sai Psychuck Manapragada
- three times Guinness record holder and the key note speaker, Dr. Avasarala (Vinjamuri) Anusuya Devi
, a legendary who was recently honored with “ Sangeet Natak Award” by Government of India. The Interactive Forum was led by Deanna Kosaraju
who is the founder of Global Techwomen and Vice President of Anita Borg Institute of Women and Technology. The event was also graced by presence of several women community leaders like Dr. Nilima Sabarwal, Manjula Gupta, Vijaya Asuri, Dr. Lalitha Kotturi, Geetha Krishnamurthy, Nandini Ray, Rebecca Bohman, Kimi DeLeonibus, Maria Agrillo, and Nita Kumar, Neera Dhar, Ena Sarkar, Poonam Bajaj, Santhi Kuchibhotla, and Bharathi Kondiparthi who were amongst the audience to support this great cause.
The strong belief and motive of Team Shakti to support women welfare led all its proceedings to be donated to two organizations namely Maitri
and the American Cancer Society
, both of which support wellbeing of women; socially and physically.
All the performers, attendees and supporters put their heart and soul to make this Event- a great success which is truly evident with the fact that this idea grew from its conception stage to execution stage in less than two months! This fund-raising event also proved the importance of personal connection and networking with like-minded women, as the event was sold out merely by utilizing tools such as traditional word of mouth publicity, social media networking and personal invitations!
Given the evident success of this event, Team Shakti hopes to organize more such events in future to address ongoing community needs.
