An own goal by Michael Essien and goals from Jordan Henderson, Daniel Agger and Jonjo Shelvey led Liverpool FC to a 4-1 demolition of Chelsea FC in their Premier League fixture today.
Coming off the FA Cup final on Saturday which saw Chelsea claim the silverware with a 2-1 victory Liverpool gained a measure of revenge ending any hopes the blues had of claiming one of the top four spots in the EPL this season.
Liverpool scored early and often in the first half notching goals in the 19th, 25th and 28th minutes to jump out to the early 3-0 lead.
Ramires would draw the visitors within two in the 50th minutes but that was as close as Chelsea would get with Shelvey netting Liverpool's fourth marker of the game in the 61st minute.
Perhaps due to the FA Cup final and the looming champions league final on May 19th Chelsea fielded a side filled mostly with substitutes, the only regular starters to make an appearance being Ramires, captain John Terry, and fellow central defender Branislav Ivanovic.
The loss means that Chelsea can only qualify for next season's UEFA Champions League with a win over Bayern Munich on May 19th. Should Chelsea claim the victory in Munich they will replace the fourth place finisher in next season's champions league.
Both teams will close out their season on Sunday with Liverpool ending what has been a disappointing season thus far when they visit Swansea and Chelsea closing out their domestic season home to relegation bound Blackburn Rovers.
