By Kyle Busch     May 28, 2012 in Driving
This article reviews the 2012 Volvo S60 T5 turbo Sedan. This car provides all the traditional Volvo safety and practicality but in a surprisingly sporty package.
More and more automakers are offering compact and mid-sized sedans that are equipped with 2.5-liter or smaller engines. Such mills are reasonably powerful, however, the real focus of these cars involves their sporty and satisfying handling.
Over the years, Volvo’s have been well known for their ‘safety and practicality’ rather than being a sporty ‘take the long road’ drive. The 2012 Volvo S60 T5 provides some sporty surprises you might not expect. Here’s what the car has to offer.
It is a mid-size five-passenger front-wheel drive four-door that possesses Volvo’s traditional safety but also in a sporty package.
This Volvo is equipped with a direct-injected turbocharged 2.5-liter inline five-cylinder engine providing 250 hp and 266 ft. lb. of torque. Of note is that this engine is somewhat unique because it is a five-cylinder. It is smoother and more powerful than most four-cylinder mills but it also offers relatively good gas mileage (the best of both worlds). The transmission is a smooth shifting six-speed automatic with manual shifting on the steering wheel. The car’s 0-60 mph time is in 7.2 seconds.
The S60 T5’s wheelbase measures 109.3 inches and its curb weight is 3,545 lbs. This car’s trunk offers 12 cubic feet of space, and the fuel tank holds 17.8 gallons. The car’s highway cruising range is 534 miles.
On the exterior this sedan has a clean and modern look with compelling styling.
At the front the windshield is well raked and quite flat (the car’s drag coefficient is a low .28 Cd). The hood is wide and smooth with slight V shaped cut lines. The headlights are large and sit a bit below the hood and travel up the front fenders. The grille is large and nicely shaped and includes three horizontal slats. In the center of the black grille is Volvo’s chrome symbol including the traditional diagonal bar. Below the bumper are three air intakes.
The side profile of this Volvo looks like a coupe. The rear window is fastback flat. The upper glass is surrounded in chrome. The front and rear fenders and the top of the doors are beveled thus adding to the car’s solid look.
At the rear this sedan has a high trunk with a spoiler lip at the top. The truck lid has sharp lines and it includes a number of pleasing shapes. The taillights are exaggerated square units set in the rear fenders. Smaller taillight units are also nicely positioned at the top of the truck lid. At the bottom there is a black insert with dual exhausts at the corners.
The interior of the S60 T5 includes quality materials throughout. The heating/air conditioning and other controls are conveniently positioned and easy to operate. The front seats are very comfortable - some of the best in the automotive industry! The gauges include a speedometer on the left and tachometer on the right. Other information (fuel, water temperature, external temperature, and time) are provided at the center of the two gauges. The dash has a very solid appearance. Many of the car’s controls are housed in the sweeping aluminum look center console. In the back there are video screens housed in the front seat headrests. The rear legroom is adequate, and the 40/60 split-folding rear seat folds down to increase the cargo area.
The brakes are vented discs at all four corners measuring 11.8 inches at the front and 11.9 inches at the rear. The S60 T5’s 60-0 mph stopping distance is in 128 feet. The tires measure 215 5017 inch.
The suspension at the front includes MacPherson struts, coil springs, twin-tube gas shock absorbers and a stabilizer bar. At the rear the setup includes multi-links, coil springs, twin-tube gas shock absorbers and a stabilizer bar.
Standard features on this Volvo include dual driver and passenger climate control, 8-way power driver seat, fold flat passenger seat, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, audio controls on the steering wheel, remote power door locks, windows and mirrors (heated), cruise control, variable intermittent wipers, front and rear cupholders, remote trunk release, retained accessory power, rear ventilation ducts, rear defogger, external temperature display, electronic speed-proportional power steering, 12 volt power outlets, interior air filtration, front reading lights, 8-speaker 160-watt AM/FM in-dash single CD player with CD MP3 playback stereo, auxiliary audio input and iPod/iPhone integration, radio data system, pre-wired for phone, Bluetooth wireless data link for hands free phone and more.
Standard safety features include four-wheel ABS brakes, front and rear head air bags, dual front side-mounted air bags, passenger air bag occupant sensing deactivation, child seat anchors, rear door child safety locks, remote anti-theft alarm system, engine immobilizer, daytime running lights, auto delay off headlights, dusk sensing headlights, stability and traction control, pre-collision safety system, electronic brake force distribution, emergency brake assist, emergency braking preparation, tire pressure monitoring and more.
The fuel rating for the Volvo S60 T5 is 20 city and 30 mpg highway.
On the road the Volvo S60 T5 Sedan provides excellent ride quality over any road surfaces. The car accelerates briskly and its handling is precise and is very rewarding. Furthermore, the S60 T5 is a very comfortable long distance highway cruiser
The warranty on the 2012 Volvo S60 T5 Sedan is 4 years and 50,000 miles bumper to bumper and drivetrain (engine and transmission). Additionally, there is 10 year and 100,000 mile corrosion protection. Furthermore, there are 5 years of roadside assistance and 5 years and 50,000 miles of free scheduled maintenance.
The base price of the 2012 Volvo S60 T5 Sedan is $32,175.
The 2012 Volvo S60 T5 is very competitive with sport sedans such as the Mercedes C250 Sport, Audi A4, and the Infiniti G 25.
If you want a solid well-balanced sedan that provides sporty performance plus day-in and day-out comfort and practicality at a competitive price, test drive the Volvo S60 T5. I think that you will indeed be pleasantly and sportedly surprised!
