Facebook added a new Organ Donor status to Timeline features. The change is geared to link those in need of organs with potential donors across the world.
Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg and the staff at Facebook added a life-saving option for users that allows them to connect with the millions of individuals around the world who are on the organ donor list; the figure is around 114,000 in the United States alone.
Facebook explained the new feature:
With the addition of “organ donor” to the Life Events section of timeline, you can state your intention to become an organ donor, and share your story about when, where or why you decided to become a donor. If you are not officially registered as an organ donor, sign up with the appropriate registry.
In an interview with CNN, Zuckerberg stated "when the tornados came through in Missouri, a lot of people were using Facebook to organize and return items that were lost. In Japan people were using Facebook to locate their friends and family. So we figured, ok is there anything else we can do to solve other problems? Like people needing organ donations?"
CNN reports that the medical society is very excited for this because nearly 18 people die daily waiting for organ transplants. Although you can place Organ Donor as a status on your timeline, you must go to an additional website to place your name on the list of donors in the United States.
To add that you’re an organ donor to your Timeline, you have to follow the following instructions:
1. Click Life Event at the top of your timeline
2. Select Health & Wellness
3. Select Organ Donor
4. Select your audience and click Save
