article imageToronto's Waterfront School dealing with danger at the crosswalk Special

By KJ Mullins     May 1, 2012 in World
Toronto - Crossing the street to go to school shouldn't be dangerous when there's a crossing guard to help your child but at Toronto's Waterfront School it can be a life and death situation.
Waterfront School is located at the foot of Bathurst and Queen's Quay. Just beyond the school the ferry that transports those using Billy Bishop Airport stands bringing a slew of taxis barreling down the intersection that children cross to attend school. In the past 3 weeks two accidents have taken place at the intersection with victims having to be transported to hospital. While children were not the victims in those accidents the aggressive nature of the cab drivers are making the trip to school a ticking time bomb.
Parents and concerned residents are out in force at the intersection with banners to bring attention to the dangers of crossing the intersection. The ongoing safety issue is being looked at by both the city and the Toronto Port Authority who runs the airport. There are plans to put in an off-street taxi corral in the future.

The intersection is also the route for City School, an alternative high school, Harbourfront Community Centre and a day care. Throughout the year students at both the day care and Waterfront School cross the intersection during the school day to go to Little Norway Park directly across from the school.
Many of the local residents that use the community centre are elderly. They need to take their time crossing the street safely but with cab drivers trying to race in and out of the airport safety precautions are being overlooked. Until a real solution is in place students and residents of the area take their lives in their hands each time they cross the street.
