"Octomom" Nadya Suleman filed for bankruptcy Monday with as much as $1 million debt. She said: "I've had to make some very difficult decisions, filing Chapter 7 was one of them. But I have to do what is best for my children and I need a fresh start."
When HLN's Dr. Drew asked her whether she had filed for bankruptcy, she answered: “Yes. I think it's called Chapter 7. To be quite honest, I can't tell you the details...I'm not knowledgeable in this domain. My family real estate attorney helped me.”
Filing Chapter 7 bankruptcy means that a court-appointed trustee will liquidate her assets to pay off creditors before her debts are discharged.
Suleman, according to ABC News, reports about $50,000 in assets in federal court filings. If she has $1 million debt, it means she owes 20 times her net worth.
According to ABC News, Suleman owes money to her father, city's water department, DirecTV and Whittier Christian School which some of her children are attending. She also owes $30,000 in rent on her four-bedroom house. The owner of the house is Amer Haddadin. Haddadin says he has allowed the house to go into foreclosure proceedings by not making mortgage payments.
HLN reports she said: “Foreclosure has been an ongoing thing for several months and this is the point -- I don't think you can get farther, deeper down into the rock bottom than we are at this point. My kids are healthy and safe. They don't feel it. I do. All the weight is on my shoulders… we cannot afford our home at this present time.”
The foreclosure auction was scheduled for Monday but has been postponed for a week.
She was already under financial pressure before the birth of her octuplets in January 2009. She lived with her mother in a three bedroom house that was in foreclosure proceedings when her octuplets were born.
Suleman is single and unemployed and she had been supporting her previous six children with food stamps and Social Security disability payments.
WSTP.com reports that two years ago, Suleman declined an offer by an adult film company to pay off her mortgage if she would sign a contract for a pornographic movie, but now she says she is open to an offer. She said: "If it's a job, and it's a well-paying job, and it's going to allow me to get us out of here and into a very safe huge home that they deserve, then I'm going to do it."
But Suleman says emphatically that she would allow no kissing and touching.
Although, she had said she would never pose nude for money, financial pressures finally made her yield ground. She earned $8,000 from posing semi-nude for a British magazine. She said: "You know, if the opportunity comes up, I'll be the first to admit I'm gonna eat my words, because all that matters is that I can take care of my family."
According to ABC News, she earned $5,000 for promoting spaying and neutering for animal rights groups. She also earned some money from celebrity boxing matches.
When media reports began suggesting she was raising her children under unhealthy conditions, social workers visited her home and said they found nothing wrong. She said that graffiti on the walls by her oldest son does not mean her home is not safe and healthy for her children. She said: "Look at what's happened. They're over 3, not one broken bone, not one injury, not one child with a disability."
Her octuplets are six boys and two girls. She said she manages the children "by implementing structure and discipline." She commented about their feeding: "They eat all the time, every hour, two hours, they get a meal, and we're talking meals that are vegetables, fruit, oatmeal."
Nadya receives $2,000 a month in Food Stamp assistance and says applying for state aid was a low point for her. she said: "I cried making that call, and you know what? I'd do it again. But my goal, my goal is to get off this immediately."
Reuters reports she gave birth to eight babies on a single day in 2009, but initial goodwill soon turned into disapproval when it became known that she had undergone fertility treatments when she already had six children.
She lives in the Southern California suburban community of La Habra.
All her children were conceived through vitro fertility treatments and she claims she prefers to remain celibate.
