A 23-year-old man was rushed to the hospital early Sunday morning with severe head injuries after being struck and run over by a taxi following a heated confrontation.
According to Montreal police Constable Daniel Lacoursière, the Montreal Gazette reports, the man was among a group of young people who got into an argument with a taxi driver at the corner of St. Laurent and Rachel. St. around 4 a.m.
An eyewitness who posted the confrontation and hit and run to YouTube wrote that the confrontation began after the passenger "slammed his door too forcefully".
But Const. Yannick Ouimet said it "appeared the 47-year-old taxi driver was having an argument with three clients when he told them to get out, according to 660 news.
As the argument became more heated, a few of the people in the group began vandalizing the taxi.
"People were actually kicking the vehicle, causing some (damage) on the vehicle," Ouimet said.
Police officials say the driver struck the victim as he attempted to speed away.
The injured man was rushed to hospital and was in stable condition Sunday night.
The taxi driver and another man were arrested a short time later, CJAD reported. The Montreal taxi driver is expected to be charged Monday.
