article imageGreek police release photographs of Russian prostitute with AIDS

By Katerina Nikolas     Apr 29, 2012 in World
Athens - Police in Greece have taken the unusual step of releasing photographs of a 22-year-old Russian prostitute infected with AIDS who was working in an illegal brothel in Athens, as part of the prosecution.
Tatiana Bukhtoyarova was discovered to be carrying the infectious disease when a team from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention carried out a raid on the brothel on Phoceae 22 road. According to Star the young prostitute did not have the necessary papers to stay in Greece.
Following the arrest of Bukhtoyarova, photographs were released to the media by order of the prosecution, in order to alert unfortunate customers of the prostitute that they may be infected with the virus. Ta Nea reported the decision to publicise her identity was to prevent panic amongst customers who may have visited other prostitutes who bore a resemblance to Bukhtoyarova and to warn those who had visited her so they can receive testing. It is also hoped it may deter others from engaging in such criminal behaviour.
The prostitute will be tried in court on charges of facilitating debauchery and for intentional gross bodily harm.
