A 12-year-old boy has been arrested in Toronto, Canada for possessing a gun. The boy had the gun at his school, the Oakdale Park Middle School, on Wed., April 25. Found by his teacher and the principal, the gun was loaded.
Oakdale Park Middle School is in the northwest part of Toronto in an area called Jane-Finch ; it's considered a troubled area and has an ongoing issue with gang violence. Const. Tony Vella of Toronto Police was quoted by Postmedia as saying that the boy walked into the school holding a .38-calibre colt revolver.
He got into a dispute with another boy, though it isn't clear if it was because he had the gun, or he had brought the gun because he'd had a dispute ongoing. At some point, Const. Vella indicated, "teachers intervened and they went through his bag" and found the loaded weapon. The gun was not fired in the dispute.
Gang Activity in Jane-Finch area of Toronto
The Jane-Finch area is largely a low-income area of T.O., with immigrants and refugees making up a large part of the area's population. The concerted gang activity in the Jane-Finch area has seen guns at schools in the past but there's no known reports of a child that young - the boy was in grade 7 - toting a loaded weapon to class before this incident.
Because of his age the boy's name cannot be released but he'll likely face gun-related charges; as of this writing he remains in the custody of police, who have, it's reported, spoken with his parents. Const. Vella told media there have been no previous gun incidents in this school.
