Beverly Hills - A great opportunity for student filmmakers comes from an organization that knows movies - The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences (AMPAS).
AMPAS is involved in much more than just the Oscars. One such endeavor focuses on students. The Student Academy Awards is a national student film competition conducted by the Academy and the Academy Foundation.
And now is the time for them to be honored as 51 entries from 29 countries, will be judged. Meanwhile, 518 entries from students representing 105 U.S. colleges and universities, are in this year's competition for the 2012 Student Academy Awards.
In its 39th year, the students will be awarded at a presentation on Saturday, June 9. It will take place at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. The winning films will also be screened.
This is an annual competition for college and university filmmakers. Winners are selected by the professional filmmaker members of the Academy. They receive trophies and cash prizes, but no, they do receive Oscar statuettes. The photo is from last year's event.
The deadline has passed and the nominations are out. Students will be judged in the following categories:
1. Documentary
2. Narrative and Alternative.
Plus, a student filmmaker from outside the U.S. is honored each year.
