Toronto - Acclaimed Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen is to receive the prestigious Glenn Gould Prize for poetry in May 2012. After receipt of the prize, Cohen will play at a special concert in his honor in Toronto.
According to the L.A. Times, on Monday May 14 Leonard Cohen will become the Ninth Laureate of The Glenn Gould Prize. A renowned line-up of musical stars including The Cowboy Junkies, John Prine and Adam Cohen will take to the stage to salute Cohen's lifetime achievements in music and poetry.
The Glenn Gould Prize is an international award bestowed by the Glenn Gould Foundation in memory of noted Canadian pianist Glenn Gould. It is awarded every third year to a living individual in recognition of his/her contributions to music and communication.
Glenn Herbert Gould was a Canadian classical pianist. The Glenn Gould Studio at the Canadian Broadcasting Centre in Toronto was named after him.
The prize jury for the 2012 award consisted of Atom Egoyan, Stephen Fry, Gary Graffman, Costa Pilavachi, Phoebe Greenberg, Elaine Overholt, Dadawa, and the chairman, Paul Hoffert.
Leonard Cohen has a distinguished body of work, including novels, poetry and a series of acclaimed recordings. His most recent album was Old Ideas released earlier in 2012.
Leonard Cohen said of the award "a great honor, sweetened by my love of the work of Glenn Gould, and our collective appreciation of his invigorating and enduring presence in the world of Music and Imagination."
The concert, held after the award dinner, will include Cowboy Junkies, Adam Cohen, Serena Ryder, folk singer Basia Bulat, award-winning country singer/songwriters John Prine, James McMurtry, Jimmie Dale Gilmore; and poetry readings by Gordon Pinsent with Greg Keelor (Blue Rodeo) and Travis Good (the Sadies).
CBC News notes that the winning laureate receive prize of C$50,000, and are given the responsibility of naming the recipient of the City of Toronto Glenn Gould Protégé Prize (who are awarded C$15,000).
A portrait of each laureate is displayed in Toronto at the Glenn Gould Studio of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
