On April 22, 2012, Earth Day will be celebrated worldwide. This is an event and cause that is growing exponentially every year by people of all ages and cultures to give thanks for our home – Planet Earth.
On April 22, 2012, we have an opportunity to celebrate our home - Planet Earth. In 1962 when John F. Kennedy was in office, a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin Gaylord Nelson, came up with the idea of celebrating Earth Day. Nelson’s respect for nature and the necessity to share this respect with others, led to one of the biggest celebratory grassroots movements in the world.
This movement was initiated by the first celebration on April 22, 1970 by Senator Nelson and Harvard University grad Dennis Hayes. This concerted effort helped to unite people in the U.S. and now, it has multiplied to a worldwide celebration. The inaugural event back then was the biggest organized civic demonstration in U.S. history. Earth Day was initially created because Gaylord Nelson saw environmental degradation increasing everywhere.
The media has covered stories and concerns from the public about environmental degradation over the last 40 years as multinational corporations have stripped the natural resources of the planet at an alarming rate in an effort to meet the demands of an expanding global population.
Just over one billion people celebrate Earth Day in 190 countries worldwide. It is important for us to give thanks to those individuals in the early 1960s that had the foresight and consciousness to initiate Earth Day. On this day, we have the chance to celebrate a home that has given us so much.
On April 22, 2012, environmentalists, corporations, and people all over the world, will celebrate Earth day together, an event and cause that is growing in importance. Children and youth in particular are raised to respect the Earth because of the actions taken by individuals in the early 1960s. Environmental stewardship is here to stay and will be significant to people of all ages and cultures in the future. With a collective effort, each one of us has the power to bring the Earth back into balance by our mindfulness, sharing, and actions.
Happy Earth Day everyone! Let us take one day to reflect how Planet Earth supplies us food and gives us joy in so many ways every day of our lives.
