According to local affiliate ABC News 13
, the young mother lay lifeless in the parking lot, located in Montgomery County, Texas.
The baby is only three days old and his mother had taken him for a checkup at the pediatrician's office in The Woodlands, a suburb of Houston.
reported the victim has been identified as Kala Marie Golden, a 28-year-old mother from Spring, Tex.
One witness, who preferred not to be identified, told ABC she heard shots and witnessed people scattering as the gunfire occurred.
Another witness to this horrific crime told ABC, "She was laying on the ground. She wasn't moving for nothing," said Joshua Jesson. "But then I saw a blue Lexus drive off."
Police believe there was a verbal exchange between the victim and the kidnapper, and the kidnapper pulled out a gun and began shooting. Houston Chronicle
reported police said Golden was yelling, "My baby, my baby," as the kidnapper took her son, Keegan Schuchardt, and his infant carrier, away.
"The child was being put into the suspect vehicle and that's when the mother tried to get into the car. The car sped away, knocking the lady to the ground," said Lt. Dan Norris with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.
Golden later succumbed to injuries from the gunshots at Hermann Memorial Hospital in The Woodlands. The car, described as a light green or sky blue Lexus, splattered with blood, is being sought by police. KHOU
reported the license plate on the suspect's car is HSL-325.

Witnesses told police a man was seated in the Lexus' passenger seat. No description of the man said to have been in the car has been noted in the Amber Alert or media reports. ABC reported police were investigating an apartment building, but at this time it is unclear whether or not the examination of the domicile and subsequent crime tape placed are related to the kidnapping and shooting.

: The Houston Chronicle
reports (via Associated Press) a suspect has been arrested and charged. The baby is unharmed and in the care of Child Protective Services until his father arrives. According to Montgomery County District Attorney Brett Lignon, Verna McClain, has been charged with capital murder.
"There were statements as indicated in the arrest record that were made by Ms. McClain that led us to believe that, in fact, this was an intentional act on her part," AP reported
Ligon said. "Not that Ms. Golden was targeted specifically, but that this was part of a plan to kidnap a child."
