A teenage boy from South Texas has been charged with 9 counts of murder after being involved in a van crash that left nine dead.
The 15-year-old teen, whose name has not been released, crashed the van he was driving and ended up killing nine of the suspected illegal immigrants that were packed into it.
The teen showed up at a probable cause hearing on Monday, according to USA Today. The boy was also charged with other counts which include smuggling a person and causing serious bodily harm. He was also charged with evading.
Detective Saul Uvalle attended the hearing and he said that the boy told the judge that if he did not drive the van then his family would have been killed. The boy did not say who would have killed his family but Uvalle did say that the boy was extremely remorseful, according to CBS.
Border patrol agents pulled over the van last Tuesday night in an area that is about 10 miles west of McAllen. When the boy stopped the van a person ended up getting out of the van and took off running. As agents took off after him, the van took off. The van ended up crashing just a few blocks over and the driver escaped. However, the parking lot was scattered with bodies, water bottles and backpacks. The boy was arrested two days later.
According to the Chicago Tribune, six others have been charged in the case and they face immigrant harboring charges.
The boy apparently cried as the charged were read to him and a judge will be the one who will eventually decide whether the teen will be tried as an adult.
