Dick Cheney has returned to politics just three weeks after receiving a new heart and reportedly gave a long speech prompting a thunder of applause.
Former Vice President Dick Cheney spoke to members of the Wyoming Republican Party for an hour and 15 minutes, walked without assistance and received a standing ovation from about 300 guests. Cheney, who had his first heart attack in his 30s, was on a transplant list for over two years before surgeons gave him a new heart three weeks ago.
Cheney has long been a lightning rod for left-wing critics, enduring a stressful 8 year tenure under President George Bush including responding to the 911 attack on New York City and the Pentagon.
An Associated Press report said Cheney spoke over an hour “without seemingly to tire.”
Cheney tossed some political fastballs and reminisced before the Republican Party state convention group.
Cheney got last minute clearance from doctors to attend the event. The crowd gave Cheney and his daughter, Liz Cheney, a long standing ovation.
Cheney said presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney is going to do a "whale of a job,” adding, “it's never been more important to defeat a sitting president and the Republican Party should unite behind Romney.”
