Gettysburg - Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum has announced that he is suspending his bid for the Republican nomination Tuesday at a campaign event in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
A Rick Santorum presidential campaign adviser has told CNN that the former Pennsylvania Senator will announce the suspension of his bid for the White House during a media event in his home state of Pennsylvania.
Another source informed the news outlet that Santorum, his wife, Karen, and his campaign manager held a conference call with campaign staff Tuesday to inform them that they should not be discouraged by the announcement.
“This race was as improbable as any you will see,” said Santorum in front of his family.
Santorum ended his campaign in order to spend more time with his three-year-old daughter, Bella, who suffers from genetic chromosomal disorder Trisomy 18. He took a couple days off from the campaign trail to help look after his daughter.
The announcement comes two weeks before the remaining GOP candidates battle it out in five states on Apr. 24: Connecticut, Delaware, New York, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. A total of 231 delegates will be at stake.
Texas Congressman Ron Paul and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich have previously stated on several occasions that they plan to stay in the race. The three-time presidential candidate has held numerous rallies on college campuses where thousands have attended.
Update: Mitt Romney's campaign issued a statement shortly after Santorum suspended his campaign:
"Senator Santorum is an able and worthy competitor, and I congratulate him on the campaign he ran. He has proven himself to be an important voice in our party and in the nation. We both recognize that what is most important is putting the failures of the last three years behind us and setting America back on the path to prosperity."
