Felipe Juan Froilan, aged 13, was practising at the home of his father Jaime de Marichalar in Soria when he accidently shot himself in the foot. He is the King of Spain's oldest grandchild.
The boy, whose mother is the King of Spain's eldest daughter, the Infanta Elena, was taken to a local medical centre before being transferred to a hospital in Madrid. The Spanish media is describing the incident as a "minor accident", although an operation was performed on the foot. His full name is Felipe Juan Froilán de Marichalar y Borbón but he is known in the Royal family as Froilán and he is fifth in line to the Spanish throne after his mother.
The BBC reports that under Spanish law, children under 14 are not permitted to use firearms and there will be an investigation into the incident by the Guardia Civil police force. It is not known whether a special licence had been obtained.
El Pais reports in Spanish that the young prince is expected to spend at least a couple of days in hospital and that he has been visited by his mother and grandmother, Queen Sofia. His parents are separated. The paper says that the accident happened at around 5pm local time on Monday April 9 when the boy and his father were practising shooting with a small calibre shotgun in the grounds of his father's home when the boy accidentally shot himself in the right foot. Froilán and his sister, Victoria, had been spending some time over the Easter holidays with their father before returning to school.
The incident will bring back bad memories for the King of Spain of Easter Week in 1956, when the 18-year-old Prince Juan Carlos and his younger brother Alfonso were allegedly playing with a revolver in the family's home in Estoril in Portugal. The gun went off accidentally hitting Prince Alfonso, who was 14 at the time, in the forehead. He died very shortly afterwards.
Prince Froilán seems to be bouncing back from the incident and is expected to return to his school in Madrid shortly. He has recently spent a year in a school in England perfecting his English. He is known for getting into scrapes, famously playing up during the wedding of the Prince and Princess of Asturias where he was seen by millions of viewers kicking one of the bridesmaids and having to be taken out by the children's nanny. He is a very popular member of the Royal family with the Spanish people and loves sports especially basketball . He is a keen follower of the football team, Real Madrid.
