article imagePizza Hut introduces hot dog-stuffed crust

By Sherene Chen-See     Apr 9, 2012 in Food
Move over, "double down" fried-chicken-as -sandwich-bread, now there's hot dog-stuffed crust pizza. Why decide between pizza or a hot dog when Pizza Hut in the UK will give you both.
The UK is not the first country to introduce the potentially artery-clogging treat. Japan has had it since at least 2007. Needless to say, some Americans are scratching their heads wondering why they were not first on this bandwagon.
As Gizmodo so eloquently puts it,
“What the hell, America‽ I thought we were the land of junk food? I thought we were hot dog heaven. I mean, sure, we didn't invent pizza, but we damn sure invented Pizza Hut! Delicious but disgusting-if-you-think-about-it cuisine is what we do best.”
All kidding aside, hot dogs inside a pizza crust sounds like a recipe for disaster. Processed meats, such as hot dogs, contain added salt and chemical preservatives. They can increase the risk of heart disease by 42 percent and diabetes by 19 percent, compared with unprocessed meat. And pizza can be high in salt, fat and calories. Food chains, such as Pizza Hut, have been criticized for serving meals with more than twice the daily recommended amount of salt for an adult.
Maybe Americans should be glad they did not invent this one first.
