A woman in Saudi Arabia has been sentenced to 50 lashes for swearing at her friend. The court had clear evidence to convict the woman as she swore via a text message which her friend retained and showed to the judge in court.
Emirates 247 reported that the woman told the court she swore in jest, but the judge still handed down the sentence of 50 lashes. The woman is allowed to appeal the sentence.
Severe punishments for swearing are not unheard of in the Kingdom. In 2008 the
LA Times reported a Turkish barber working in Saudi Arabia was sentenced to death by beheading for swearing at a neighbor who complained to the authorities.
In an earlier case a British hospital manager was sentenced to 50 lashes for swearing at his staff. According to the
Post and Courier the incident occurred in 1992.
