California Department of Child Support Services reports losing 800,000 child support records during transit from Colorado to California.
Backup cartridges containing over 800,000 child support cases were lost during transit from an IBM facility Colorado to California via FedEx air shipment. California Child support department transported the information to the IBM facility in Boulder Colorado to determine if the California Department would be able to run the state's system for child support remotely incase of natural disaster.
Although the California Department of Child Support Service director Kathleen Hrepich does not believe the information has been accessed, the devices contain information such as names, addresses, Social Security numbers, drivers' license or identification numbers, names of health insurance providers, health insurance plan membership identification numbers and employer information for all individuals involved in each child support case.
They are encouraging individuals with child support cases in California to call credit reporting agencies to place a fraud alert on all credit accounts. For more information, call the Child Support Department at 866-904-7674.
