A 10-year-old Colombian girl has become one of the world's youngest ever mothers after giving birth to a healthy daughter.
The 10-year-old girl belongs to Wayuu, which is an indigenous tribe. The tribe is based in the La Guajira Peninsula, which is located in the northern part of Columbia. The girl underwent a C-Section and she was 39 weeks pregnant at the time.
According to
DailyMail, this was the first time the girl has even seen a doctor regarding her pregnancy. The girl hails from the town of Manaure.
The details surrounding the story are sketchy, according to the
New York Daily. However, it is reported that the girl went into a local hospital in a great deal of pain and she was profusely bleeding. She then ended up giving birth to a baby that weighed a little over five pounds.
According to
Hollywoodlife, the father is not known. However, he could face charges for underage sex but Colombia's constitution allows some autonomy and to retain some cultural heritages to Wayuu, and this includes giving birth at a very young age.
Efrain Pacheco Casadiego is the director of the hospital and he criticized the practice. He said that it's shocking because the girls should be playing with dolls but instead they have to take care of babies.
