Legendary film, TV and stage star Neil Patrick Harris has been announced as host for the 2012 Tony Awards on June 10th in New York.
The announcement was made last Tuesday and this is the How I Met Your Mother star's third time hosting the show, having hosted in both 2009 and 2011.
According to the Tony Awards website, Harris is excited to be hosting again and said so in his usual comedic style.
""I'm thrilled to be a part of this year's Tony Awards. Not only will I be shining a spotlight on the best that Broadway has to offer, but hopefully I'll score some free house seats to a show or 5."
Harris will not just be hosting. Like he did at last year's awards, he will also be one of the producers of the show.
According to the National Post, Harris won an Emmy for his 2010 hosting gig and it is hoped he will bring the viewership up from last year's 6.9 million viewers. In another effort to catch the attention of more viewers, the L.A. Times reports that the show will be presenting the awards for technical and lifetime achievement in a ceremony before the show. In addition, It will also be presenting snippets from national touring shows in hopes of appealing to American audiences.
The award show website cites some of Harris's achievements. Harris has also recently hosted the Primetime Emmy Awards and won awards for his recent and current roles in How I Met Your Mother and Glee and was recently on film in A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas. No stranger to the stage either, Harris has acted and directed in multiple big name shows including RENT and Sweeney Todd.
The awards will be aired at 8 p.m. on CBS and will be taking place at the Beacon Theatre in New York.
