There were only 3 goals but they were scored by the only two Teemus currently in the league, Teemu Hartikainen of the Edmonton Oilers and the fabled 41-year-old Teemu Selanne of the Anaheim Ducks. Hartikainen, the 21-year-old Oiler who's still a rookie, scored twice in the first period, at the 15 second mark and at 6:04; Selanne scored the 663rd of his career at the 14:12 mark.
As it turned out that was all the scoring and Edmonton won, 2-1. The achievement was noted by Hartikainen, who'd never scored twice in an NHL game and never been on the ice with the other Teemu. “He was the biggest hockey player when I was growing up,” Hartikainen told media after the game. “He was kind of my idol. Being on the ice at the same time in the faceoffs tonight, it was a great opportunity.”
Selanne and Hartikainen do the scoring
It can be determined it's the first time it's occurred - and yes, it's a quirky record, not one with real import - because other than those two Teemus, DJ could find no other Teemu to have scored in the NHL. For the promising Hartikainen, a center taken in the sixth round by the Oilers in the 2008 draft who's played just 25 NHL games, they were goals 4 and 5 of his career. His first 3 came last season against Colorado, Minnesota and Calgary.
It is the first time the two players from Finland have met in a game. There is another Teemu who played this season in the NHL, Teemu Laakso, also from Finland. Lasko's a defenceman in the Nashville Predators organization who played 9 games with the Preds earlier this season and has played 17 in the league. Currently in the AHL with the Milwaukee Admirals, he hasn't scored a point in the NHL.
As the regular season winds down with Anaheim out of the playoff picture, Teemu Selanne has said that he has not yet decided if he'll return for a 21st NHL season. He currently leads the Ducks in scoring with 65 points.
