article imageVisiting London for the Olympics? Just don't get married

By Anne Sewell     Mar 30, 2012 in Sports
London - Officials, coaches and athletes visiting London for the summer Olympics have been warned. Don't try to get married while you are in the UK.
No marriages or common-law partnerships are allowed. They have also been told that they can't seek employment or apply to study in the United Kingdom.
RT reports that almost 20,000 non-EU citizens will be attending the London Olympics in one way or another. They will be issued with 6-month visas for this purpose.
However, with fears that the Olympics might attract terrorists and illegal immigrants, the bans on marriage, studying and employment will apply. The UK Home Office fears that some visitors might exploit their presence in the United Kingdom to try and get residency.
They will also have to provide evidence that they have enough funds to accommodate them during their stay and for their return journey.
A spokesman for the UK Home Office explained: “Accreditation for the non-EU Games Family doesn't impose any immigration status. It is to give them access to the Games and then we expect them to leave.”
More reasons for this paranoia? In 2011, after competing in the Commonwealth Youth Games, two 16-year-old Cameroon athletes apparently absconded from Manchester airport. Also in Manchester, there is talk that the 30-man Sierra Leone team completely disappeared.
So you have been warned! Enjoy the games, and then please leave.
