Chipotle has announced they have a special deal in mind to commemorate Earth Day 2012. Promoting environmental awareness, the Mexican food chain plans to give out free burritos, salads or tacos to customers who show themselves to be eco-friendly.
The food isn't entirely free, as there is a purchase involved to demonstrate environmental consciousness.
According to a Business Wire press release on behalf of Chipotle dated March 26, (courtesy of The Street), Chipotle Mexican Grill is rewarding "eco-friendly customers" with free food when they buy a Chipotle-branded lunch bag between now and April 14.
The restaurant chain plans to donate proceeds from the sales of the lunch bags to the Chipotle Cultivate Foundation. The foundation's mission is "committed to creating a more sustainable and healthful food supply and to raising awareness concerning food issues."
This promotion aligns with the company's philosophy of sustainable and healthful food. The bags being promoted are made through a process called "upcycling." The company has created them through reusing old Chipotle billboards.
“We are changing the way people think about and eat fast food,” said Steve Ells, founder, chairman and co-CEO of Chipotle. “For us, that starts with serving food made with better ingredients from more sustainable sources, but that same idea impacts all facets of our business. We are always pushing ourselves to find better, more sustainable practices for everything we do, and looking to educate our customers about these issues and why we think they are so important.”
Customers who purchase the bag will receive a free burrito card they can redeem at Chipotle one of the free menu items; even the card is made from re-purposed limestone taken from construction sites and quarry waste (Business Wire).
The bags can be purchased at Chipotle's online store, supplies are limited. Chipotle says each bag is as unique as the billboard it was created from, cost $18.
