A few weeks after announcing his highly anticipated album of original material in 18 years, soul seducer singer-songwriter Bobby Womack has been diagnosed with colon cancer, according his longtime friend Bootsy Collins.
"He Wanted You All to Know That He Loves You & Thxs for the Prayers," Funk bassist Collins wrote on Facebook. "Docs Says He Is In 1st Stage of Colon Cancer, He is Very Up Beat About His Future, we laughed & joked before we hung up."
Collins said he had spoken to the soul musician over the weekend, The Chicago Tribune reported.
The 68-year-old soul singer has also been released from the hospital Monday evening after being successfully treated for pneumonia, according to The Associated Press.
In a statement through his New York publicist, Womack thanked his fans for their prayers, love and well wishes, and says he looks forward to when he tours in support of his upcoming album.
Earlier this month, The Guardian reported, Womack was rushed to hospital in Houston, Texas, suffering from "severe shortness of breath".
Womack's representative explained that the singer would undergo a "minor heart procedure", postponing a scheduled gig until 2 June. "We anticipate a full and speedy recovery," the representative said at the time. "Thank you for your understanding, patience and prayers."
Womack has just completed his first album in 18 years, The Bravest Man in the Universe, recorded with Damon Albarn and XL Recordings' Richard Russell, home of Adele, which is due for release on June 11 .
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee is known for such hits as "If You Think You're Lonely Now", and "Woman's Gotta Have It". Womack also wrote the first #1 Rolling Stones' hit It's All Over Now.
“You have earnt a number of great nicknames over the years, The Preacher, The Poet, The Survivor and The Womack,” asked ZANI Media in an interview with Womack. “I suppose you are all of these things, but which name do you feel suits you the best in 2011.”
“The Poet,” Womack said.
