The killing of Trayvon Martin on February 26, 2012 brings forth a series of rallies, outcries of racism, and half-truths.
The history of America has indeed demonstrated a large racial bias and extreme prejudice against blacks. A 2010 hate crime statistics report released by the FBI in 2011 demonstrates that 47.3% of hate crimes reported are motivated by race. Out of this percentage of racially biased crimes, 70.2% were anti-black crimes.
The struggle for blacks in America dominated the early 1900s and still continues today. With the shooting of Trayvon Martin, the media inflates the racial injustice in a way that most Americans will follow, black, white, or any other race. The largest problem with the medias portrayal of events such as this shooting, is the media tends to bend and twist the facts of the case so greatly as to create a biased view on crimes and acts that occur.
This case in particular brings forth that Zimmerman had a criminal record that consists of violent refusal for arrest and assault on a police officer. What the media does not release, however, is that Zimmerman was not found guilty of either of these crimes. In fact, the state of Florida failed to provide any evidence of such criminal acts. Zimmerman was arrested; for non-violent refusal for arrest.
The American judicial system is structured in a way that each defendant is innocent until proven guilty. The American media system, is just the opposite. After the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, the Sanford Police department conducted an investigation of the instance and determined that the “stand your ground” law applies; thus Zimmerman was never charged with murder.
Outrage of this lack-of-conviction, resulted in the parents of Trayvon begging America to convict Zimmerman of murder. Trayvon’s parents even went as far to convince the FBI and Department of Justice to become involved with this criminal investigation.
Americans see this as an open and shut case, but Americans do not know what happened.
After the release of the 2:43 second 911 call from Zimmerman, Americans quickly jumped on the media bandwagon and continue to fight for justice for Trayvon. What Americans are most likely not aware of, was the amount of editing that went into that 911 call. The actual 4:12 call to 911 shows light on a different story.
A story that more fits the mold of the claim for self defense. The 911 operator instructed Zimmerman not to follow Trayvon. What was Zimmerman’s response? “Ok” and the wind in the background from chasing after Trayvon suddenly stops. Zimmerman then continues to talk to the 911 operator for over 2 minutes AFTER saying “OK.”
This evidence in itself does not prove that Zimmerman is innocent and rightfully claiming “self defense,” but it does show a different perspective of the story that not too many Americans will accept.
After the outcry and protests began, a group labeled as “The New Black Panthers” placed a $10,000 reward for the capture of George Zimmerman. For what? The man is supposed to be innocent until proven guilty, but yet this group is directly threatening the life of this man. Those threats in itself represent hate crime. Whereas hate crimes include intimidation and other non-violent acts including threats of violence. Yet, no one cares enough to raise this as a problem. Americans are too blinded by the media to view this actual hate crime as a hate crime in itself. Truth is, George Zimmerman is not free. He is in hiding, receiving multiple death threats, and was kicked out of his college. He was never proven guilty, but yet he lost his life just as Trayvon has.
America is not perfect. But Americans are out of control when it comes to crimes in the media. I think every American needs to calm down and rationalize for a moment this fact:
The FBI and Department of Justice have taken over this investigation. They took over the investigation nearly one week ago, yet they have never released any statements that say Zimmerman is guilty. Why America? Why have they sifted through all the evidence for over a week now and still have not found enough evidence to convict Zimmerman of murder?
There are only two people that know what happened in this case: George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin. Trayvon Martin does not have the ability to share what happened. All that we know is that Trayvon was in town visiting his father because he was out of school on a five day suspension. Why was he suspended in the first place? Was his suspension the result of a physical altercation? A reporter for the Martin's said he was on a suspension of 10 days for having Marijuana on school property. If in fact Martin was routinely using drugs, it would justify the claim of him acting suspicious. George Zimmerman has the ability to speak, and he has spoken; yet nobody believes anything he says.
It is an unfortunate instance when an unarmed person is killed. But not every murder or physical assault includes a perpetrator with a weapon. A 6’3” Trayvon Martin could be viewed as a serious threat to a 5’9” George Zimmerman. The media releases photos of Trayvon from a much younger age. The photos convince Americans that Trayvon was a little, helpless boy. The media also only releases photos of Zimmerman from a 2005 mug shot. Nobody has knowledge as to what he may look like now. Some friends close to him say that he has lost a lot of weight and is much thinner than is portrayed by the media.

Truth is, Americans have never thought ahead about what they are doing. People who protest this killing are being arrested on a daily basis. What would happen if the FBI and the Department of Justice never find Zimmerman guilty? Will it just be “another white man getting away with murdering a black guy” or will it actually cause people to believe the truth behind the case?
