article imageJustin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen on Ellen: A friend in high places

By Marcus Hondro     Mar 25, 2012 in Entertainment
It pays to have friends in high places and nobody knows that axiom better than Canadian singer Carly Rae Jepsen. Jepsen appeared on the Ellen Degeneres show Friday and it was all because of her new friend, pop star Justin Bieber.
Bieber was there with Jepsen for her first U.S. TV appearance, where the 26-year-old Jepsen sang her single 'Call Me Maybe'. The Never Say Never Kid was not announced as a guest but turned up to introduce Jepsen, who he referred to as "my artist, Carly Rae Jepsen." He stuck around to talk and do a little singing of his own.
Bieber and Braun sign Jepsen
Why "my artist". Well, when he was back home in Canada over the holidays, Bieber heard 'Call Me Maybe' on the radio and felt Jepsen was talented and immediately took steps to contact her. He passed along information to his manger, Scooter Braun, and before long she was signed to their 'Schoolboy Records.'
Jepsen has two albums out and she appeared in the 2007 season of 'Canadian Idol', finishing up third. She's also toured extensively but all of it has happened only in her home country. That's changed and before appearing on the 'Ellen', 'Call Me Maybe' was sitting in eighth on the iTunes charts (after her appearance, it moved up one spot to seventh).
"I had never branched outside of Canada and had no idea how to, and then one miraculous day, Justin called," she said. "At the time, I was touring in Canada in a soccer mom van with my band, and it seemed too good to be true," Jepsen thanked her new manager for all he's done for her.
Justin Bieber previews 'Boyfriend"
Bieber was naturally the Canadian singer that the audience had the greater interest in and Ellen talked him into doing a bit of his upcoming single, 'Boyfriend', which will be released on March 26. He only sang a snippet but it drew a massive round of applause. It will also be part of his new album, 'Believe', to be released in the spring.
Bieber and Jepsen hinted at a collaboration but didn't give details.
