has reported that a teenager visited the St. Petersburg Friends of Strays animal shelter to take one of the dogs for a walk as part of her volunteer work.
When she was walking Mabeline, a Rhodesian Ridgeback mix, on a stretch of grass behind the building, registered sexual predator, Michael Bacon chased the girl. He grabbed her hair and pinned her to the ground.
The girl couldn't get loose, but Mabeline did. Immediately the 38-pound dog started barking, scaring the attacker enough that the girl was able to escape the scene.
Mabeline has now been adopted by Mary Callahan. Calahan had no idea about her new pet's heroic actions until she was notified by WTSP
, a local TV station.
"I looked at my dog and I thought, 'You are a hero,'" Callahan told the broadcaster.
The shelter says that the dog has a sweet nature, but she is also, it appears, very protective.
According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel
, Bacon has now been arrested.
Hopefully Mabeline has received some treats for her valiant actions.
