One Direction have become the first British music act in history to reach number one on the US Billboard Chart with their debut album.
According to theRadio Times, the album, Up All Night, “sold 176,000 copies in its first week on release in the States”.
One Direction, consisting of five lads – Niall Horan (18), Zayn Malik (19), Liam Payne (18), Harry Styles (18) and Louis Tomlinson (20) – has had a meteoric rise to fame despite only coming third in the 2010 UK version of The X Factor.
The boy band – which is signed to Simon Cowell’s SyCo Records – saw their debut single, “What Makes You Beautiful”, reach number one in the UK Singles Chart in 2011, with their first album becoming the fastest-selling debut album in the UK for 2011.
In February this year, “What Makes You Beautiful” won the boy band the Best British Single award at the Brit Awards, 2012.
Of their latest achievement, Styles commented to the BBC, saying, “We simply cannot believe that we are number one in America. We want to thank each and every one of our fans in the US who bought our album and we would also like to thank the American public for being so supportive of us.”
One Direction are following in the footsteps of their fellow Brit, Susan Boyle – another British talent show contestant – who also reached the US number-one spot with her debut solo album, I Dreamed a Dream, in 2009.
