Nursing a stunning defeat in the hands of Turkmenistan, the Philippine Azkals defeated Palestine 4-1 to clinch the third spot in the AFC Challenge Cup Monday in Nepal
Ealier the Azkals suffered a stunning defeat in the hands of defending champions North Korea, which dimmed the Philippines' hope to make it to the semi-finals until they surprised India and Tajikistan with their remarkable performance and team spirit.
The victory over Tajikistan last Tuesday, marked the first time the Philippines enters the semi-finals of the AFC Challenge Cup.
Phil Younghusband along with Guirado brothers delivered the four goals that earned for the Philippines the third place in the AFC Challege Cup
The Philippines is expected to climb the FIFA World Ranking with the Azkals' recent victories over India and Tajilistan.
Despite the loses against North Korea and Turkmenistan, Azkals' coach MIchael Weiss expressed his satisfaction over the accomplishment of the team.
."Overall I think we deserved to finish third and I thank my players for their never-say-die attitude…I also want to take the opportunity to thank all our fans in the Philippines, in the Gulf, in Europe and all over the world who have supported us. Without them, what we have achieved would not have been possible,” Weiss said in the post-match news conference which was reported by the AFC.
"This has been a good tournament for us and we are taking the third-place match very seriously. We see this as our final and we will do our best to bring pride and glory to the country," Weiss said.
Bagging the third spot in the AFC Challenge Cup, the Philippine Azkals now become a force to watch in the Asian Football circuit.
