A photograph showing a bumper sticker featuring a racist political slogan playing on the word "renege" ("re-Nig") has gone viral on Facebook, Twitter and the blogosphere after it was posted on Facebook on Thursday.
The sticker advises Americans in large white type: "Don't Re-Nig In 2012." Below this message is smaller text that reads: "Stop repeat offenders. Don't re-elect Obama."
Huffington Post reports the sticker apparently originated from a site called "Stumpy's Stickers" where it could be purchased. Huffington Post says the site had several design variations of its anti-Obama theme. One features Obama represented as a chimpanzee and large type that says "Obama '12." Another shows a drawing of Ku Klux Klan members with the text: "The Original Boys In The Hood." Yet another design, according to ABC News, shows the Confederate Flag with the message: “If this flag has offended you, then it made my day!”
ABC News reports the site has since shut down, the email address suspended and the owner of the site has not been identified.
The Grio notes: "This particular campaign has distinguished itself from other Obama attacks, by being unapologetically race-based, with no real messages about policy."
Complex comments about the sticker designs: "This is what happens when people try to get creative with racism, and no one checks them. It’s a wonder nobody has tossed a brick (or the very least a milkshake) at that window yet. With campaign season right around the corner, expect to see more of this in the coming months."
