Louisville - Murray State had a near-perfect record coming into the NCAA March Madness Tournament. How did they capture their first tournament victory in school history?
The talent that led Murray State’s near-perfect season was on national display today as the 6th seeded Racers defeated the 11th seeded Colorado State Rams, 41 to 58 . They notched the first NCAA Mens Basketball Tournament victory.
The first half was much closer than the final score. Colorado State’s Hornung used his rebounding prowess to put his Rams up 24 to 23 at the half. But Colorado State turned the ball over several times in the opening minutes of the second half, allowing Murray State to take the lead with a 16-2 run. By the two minute mark of the second half, the Rams had turned the ball over 21 times versus Murray State's 5.
The Racers led by as much as 17, with senior Donte Poole notching 13 points and junior Isaiah Canaan finishing with 15. Eight different players scored for Murray State. Colorado State's 6'4" Hornung fouled out with 12 points and an impressive 17 rebounds.
Murray State will now face the winner between Marquette and BYU Saturday night.
