article imageDaniel Craig (aka 007) reveals ‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' Special

By Earl Dittman     Mar 14, 2012 in Entertainment
From his diverse roles in Casino Royale, Cowboys & Aliens, Dream House to his latest, Craig loves to take risks with his films choices. His new film, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (coming soon to Blu-Ray/DVD), is his most ambitious part choice to date.
Having left his 007 tuxedo home for the day, the fit and trim Englishman, Daniel Craig, wearing a blue sweater, dark beige jeans and a white shirt and tie is spending his New York City discussing his role as the journalist in the hit motion picture, based on the bestselling motion picture, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. A hit with both critics and audiences alike (both in it's foreign and English-language versions). The polite and charming Daniel Craig talks about performing his love scenes in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo with his gorgeous costar Rooney Mara and explains why his role required the muscle-bound Brit to pack on some weight. Craig laughingly recalls why he believed the hanging scene was safe. He quickly adds that there were problems the night director David Fincher filmed the scene of Craig hanging from a ceiling with plastic covering his face.

For those of you who may have missed the David Fincher classic, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo also stars Robin Wright, Stellan Skarsgård, Christopher Plummer and Joely Richardson. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a gripping, hard-edged thriller based on the first of Stieg Larsson's suspenseful and spell-binding Millennium Trilogy. The Millennium Trilogy, which altogether has sold over 50 million copies in 46 countries and has become a worldwide phenomenon. The first film begins with disgraced journalist, Mikael Blomkvist (Craig), having lost a libel suit and resigning as co-owner of his magazine, Millennium. In the interim, he takes on the investigation of a 40 year-old disappearance case on behalf of the wealthy Henrik Vanger (Plummer) of Vanger Industries. With the help of the pierced, tattooed and capable computer hacker, Lisbeth Salander (Mara), they uncover corruption that no one could have ever imagined.

Earning $200 million in box office worldwide, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo received five Academy Award nominations including Actress in a Leading Role (Rooney Mara), Cinematography, Film Editing, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing. The film adaptation was directed by David Fincher with screenplay by Academy Award winner Steven Zaillian (2002, Writing (Original), Gangs of New York) who executive produced along with Mikael Wallen and Anni Faurbye Fernandez (both Headhunters). The film's original musical score is by Academy Award winners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (2011, Best Original Score, The Social Network). "We've had a great group of people making this movie," Craig reveals. "Everyone gave 1000 percent of what they had and audiences got a brilliant movie in return."
In addition to chatting about The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Craig offers a few tidbits on Skyfall, his upcoming third outing as James Bond (the thriller is being directed by Sam Mendes), gives fans a little of his career motto and confesses that he wouldn't mind doing another Tattoo sequel. "After doing James Bond, I learned I don't mind doing sequels, just as long as they are just as good or even better than the previous one," the voices of Sakharine and Rackham in The Adventures of Tintin begins, "and I get to work with actors and a crew just as great. Tattoo is great piece of work, I'm here when they call for the next one. Count me in."

What drew you to want to be in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo?
"I really wanted to play the grizzled journalist from Stieg Larsson's book. I really thought it would be a challenge."
You are a tad older than your costar Rooney Mara, who plays Lisbeth Salander. Did the age difference bother you when you were doing the love scenes?
"Well, these two shouldn’t have a relationship. They should have never even met in life. They come from completely different social classes. Salander never trusts anyone because so few people in her life are straight with her. I tell her in the film, ‘Forget that. You’re great.’ It just appeals to her on every level."
Do you ever feel uncomfortable doing love scenes?
"Intimate scenes are a dry, bizarre thing. There are people standing around while you pretend to make love. I’m thinking, ‘I don’t make those kind of movies!’"

Is it true you actually put on weight to play your journalist character?
"Yes, it is. I was stick thin after Cowboys and Aliens. The character in Tattoo had to be as real as possible. It was easy for me to get into it. It was lots of pizza and red wine."
In The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, your character Blomkvist gets in a bit of jam. He is cuffed and hung from a ceiling, and your entire face is wrapped in Saran Wrap. I understand you requested something from (director) David Fincher before you started filming. What was it?
"The first night, I told him that I needed to hold this little metal thing in his hand, so if I began to lose consciousness, I could cut the plastic wrap away from my mouth."
Why did you need it?
"Actually, acting like you’re suffocating is not very different from actually suffocating. (laughs) It would be hard to detect what was really happening, so that's why I felt I needed the little metal thing."
What happened if you were in trouble and couldn't breathe?
"There was even a code word if I was in trouble!"
And what was it?
"The code word was, ‘Unnnnhhh!’" (laughs)

There was a bit of an accident that night wasn't there. Fincher said he was listening to the monitor and heard a strange ‘Ting, ting, ting.’ sound. What happened?
"What I was told was that everyone rushed in because apparently, I had passed out. We did wrap for the night. On the production report was, ‘Let Daniel go 15 minutes early due to unconsciousness.’"
That it is something you will probably never forget.
"Hey, it was just another day of working with David Fincher." (laughs)
What can you say about Skyfall, the third James Bond film your working on?
"It’s a great script with Sam Mendes directing. He’s a huge Bond fan like me. We’ve been working on it quietly for two years. We’ve been taking all the favorite bits of our favorite Bond movies and putting them together so we can reintroduce them in this movie."
How far into production are you for the Skyfall/Bond movie?
We’re six weeks in and I’m having fun."
Would you consider doing a Tattoo sequel?
"I’d love to stay involved."
I've been asking other actors if they have a career motto they live by. Most do. Do you?
"I do. The less you think about what other people think in this industry, the more original you can be. You can’t think, ‘Will other people like it or not. You just get on with it. It has served me well so far."
