Fuengirola - April 1 sees the start of Semana Santa, or Holy Week, in Spain. It includes a week of events with solemn parades and fascinating costumes parading through the Spanish streets.
Semana Santa or Holy Week is celebrated every year on different dates, as it is based on an astronomical event.
In 2012 the main Holy Week events are as follows
April 1 - Palm Sunday
April 2 - Easter Monday
April 5 - Maundy Thursday
April 6 - Good Friday
April 7 - Easter Saturday (or Holy Saturday)
April 8 - Easter Sunday
Easter is an annual celebration in Spain where Christians commemorate the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus. It is a liturgical period of intense activity.
The following are scenes from last year's Holy Week in Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol in Andalucia, Spain. Jesus is carried around the streets in a parade and exotic costumes are on view.
With the lovely spring weather at this time of year, the town is well worth a holiday visit over this fascinating week.
