Beyond the Sling, on controversial holistic attachment parenting

By Nancy Houser     Mar 7, 2012 in Lifestyle
Mayim Blalik's book, 'Beyond the Sling,' is about her personal embracement of holistic attachment parenting, with many professionals and mothers wondering if it will be the next wave in childcare.
An actress since childhood, Blalik turned down going to Yale and Harvard to receive her Ph.D. from the L.A.'s University of California to remain close to her parents. For those who watch television's Big Bang Theory, Mayim Blalik is the nerdy genius girlfriend of Sheldon Cooper, a scientific prodigy from the word go.
Her book, 'Beyond the Sling," is a guide to holistic attachment parenting that includes first-hand advice based on the parenting her two sons. It is currently #2 on the Amazon parenting category and was well received by the View.
However, the approval of this controversial method varies from one mother to another, as it guides parenting with co-sleeping (sleeping with parents); breastfeeding on the baby's cues --- not a schedule; wearing a baby with a sling instead of carrying them; using gentle discipline; and elimination communication. All are methods of holistic parenting for parents who desire a different way to raise their children.
Mayim Blalik has used her Ph.D. degree in neuroscience to put together her methods of attachment parenting that she and her husband use with their two sons.
