Los Angeles - The Top 13 contestants on Season 11 of American Idol were announced tonight in an evening that included performances by six hopefuls who were competing for three coveted wild card slots awarded by judges Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler.
American Idol narrowed down the competition from a field of twenty-five semi-finalists who competed this week to see who would make the cut and become the Top 13 finalists for the new season.
The Top 10, made up of five guys and five girls based on fan voting that topped the 33 million mark, included Philip Phillips, Jessica Sanchez, Hollie Cavanagh, Joshua Ledet, Heejun Han, Shannon Magrane, Skyler Laine, Colton Dixon and Jermaine Jones.
Given a second chance to perform in a "sing-for-your-life" round were Jennifer Hirsh, Jeremy Rosado, Brielle Von Hugel, DeAndre Brackensick, Erika Van Pelt, and Reed Grimm. The six talented singers were given one more opportunity at a spot in the Top 13 with a performance of a song of their choice.
After much deliberation Randy Jackson chose Erika Van Pelt, Jennifer Lopez selected Jeremy Rosado and Steven Tyler saved DeAndre Brackensick as his wild card pick to round out the Top 13.
Host Ryan Seacrest announced next week's American Idol competition, which will air on Wednesday with the results broadcast the following night, will include songs from Stevie Wonder for the boys and Whitney Houston for the girls. The contestants will be mentored in their first round as finalists by Grammy award winning artist Mary J. Blige
