article imageApple to reveal the iPad 3 March 7 at media event

Apple is known for keeping its new gadget release dates relatively secret, but news of the iPad 3 may have revealed its release date of March 7.
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that journalists have received an invite to a March 7 media event from Apple. The invite included the tagline, "We have something you really have to see. And touch."
Mashable is reporting that CNBC tweeted that "sources" have said that the iPad 3 will be unveiled next week in New York. The tweet also revealed that the new iPad will be a quad-core, 4G LTE enabled device.
Engadget has been tracking all the rumors associated with the iPad's announcement and release, as well as its rumored features and specifications. A retina scanner is rumored to be included, however that was also one of the iPad 2 rumors that never came to fruition. The aesthetic design is also rumored to be tweaked, giving the tablet a more beveled look. The weight is also in question as the new guts of the device required a bit more girth to accommodate them.
Verizon and AT&T are also rumored to give the new iPad 4G LTE coverage.
The unveiling in early March would coincide with the iPad 2's unveil date. Sales of the iPad 2 have diminished, even though Apple has been very optimistic about their sales numbers. Their 3Q 2011 sales numbers did not meet forecasts, according to Digitimes Research. Many speculate the drop in sales was due to the estimated release of the iPad 3.
