Justin Bieber keeps getting opportunities to turn up on television sets all over the world and who'd'a'thunk it but the pop singer from Canada wound up in the opening skit to the 84th Academy Awards.
Bieber was in a well-produced, pretty slick skit that was like a short film. It had Crystal interacting with film stars like George Clooney and Jonah Hill, appearing in scenes from the pantheon of films from 2012 that were up for an Oscar. Bieber was in a scene right out of the Woody Allen movie 'Midnight in Paris'.
Justin Bieber acts in 'Midnight' at Oscars
There was a recurring scene in the movie where Owen Wilson, the lead, would wait at midnight at the same corner in Paris to be picked up by a cab, at which time he'd be transported back in time to an era when American expatriate writers F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway, and others, lived in that city.
Instead of Wilson waiting in the scene on the Paris corner, it was Crystal and in the taxi pulling up, behind the wheel, was Bieber, in a tux. He calls over Crystal who asks why he's there. "I'm here to get you the 18-24 demographic," Bieber says. He asks the Oscar host how long he wants him and Crystal tells him a "couple seconds" should do it and they look at each other. Bieber does a great job of playing a kind of 'huh, yeah, so...time up yet?' moment.
Bieber then tells Crystal he and Fitzgerald and Hemingway are gonna hang out. At that moment, from the back seat Crystal, now playing the movie icon, the late Sammy Davis Jr., sticks his head forward and says that they're off to get Hitler and adds "Hey Billy, is Biebs the young Sinatra, or am I nuts?"
Bieber tells him "Oh Sammy, stop it!" and Sammy tells Crystal to "peace out" and Bieber says "Good luck, Bob" and they're out of the skit. Bieber's great, perfectly understated and genuinely funny performance was helped not just by his confidence as a performer, but also by having appeared in two episodes of CSI: Las Vegas.
Justin Bieber: Acting in a Movie
Bieber is on record as saying that he wants to star in a movie and he has suggested it may be as early as this summer. He's currently working on 'Believe', his next studio album, all new material, and last week tweeted that the first single from the record will be out in March.
Here's what Bieber, who turns 18 on March 1, tweeted on Feb. 27 about appearing in the opening skit of the 84th Academy Awards: "a BIG SHOUTOUT to Billy Crystal. Thanks for letting me be a part of the show and you killed it tonight. #muchlove."
