The British company Gibbs Technologies, has announced two new additions to its growing fleet of High Speed Amphibian (HSA) vehicles, the Phibian and the Humdinga II. The company gave a demonstration of the Phibian on the Potomac River recently.
The Phibian, a 30-foot vehicle, is capable of more than 80 mph on land and 30 mph in water. According to Gizmag.com, the Phibian is a 4WD vehicle with twin turbo diesel engines. It can implement transition from land vehicle to water vehicle in a few seconds. The vehicle uses an automated system that initiates transition based on the depth of water beneath it. Once the system determines there is a enough water to float on, it retracts it land wheels and transforms into a planing vehicle by decoupling the drive axles and raising the wheels out of the water.
Phibian can comfortably carry three crew members and 12 passengers and it can be reconfigured for cargo-carrying duty. It can manage a payload of 3,307(1,500 kg) and is designed for military, rescue and humanitarian operations in mind.
According to Gibbs Chairman Neil Jenkins: “Natural disasters in recent memory, such as the earthquake and tsunamis in Japan, Thailand, Sri Lanka and elsewhere in Asia; as well as the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, illustrate the need for amphibians as capable, versatile and efficient as Phibian."

Humdinga II is an amphibious 21.5-foot vehicle. It is powered by a supercharged 350hp v8 gasoline engine. It can carry five to seven passengers or a payload of 750 kg (1653 pounds). It is smaller and more maneuverable than Phibian and is designed for use in light-duty patrol or rapid response operations. The vehicle is rugged and designed for very difficult and remote terrain. According to Fast Phibian, it is designed mainly for military use.
