article imageJack in the Box unveils bacon milkshake to negative reviews

By Tucker Cummings     Feb 11, 2012 in Food
There's a common saying among foodies: "Bacon makes everything better." But according to some reviewers, the bacon-flavored milkshake recently unveiled at fast food chain Jack in the Box is the exception to the rule.
To be fair, there is no actual bacon in the bacon milkshake. Instead, you'll get a blend of real vanilla ice cream, bacon-flavored Torani syrup (which is vegetarian, due to artificial flavoring), whipped topping and a maraschino cherry.
Oh, and quite a lot of calories. According to the LA Times, the 16 ounce size has 773 calories, while the 24 ounce version packs a whopping 1,081 calories, about half of what is recommended for an adult male. The big size also gives you 37 grams of saturated fat, 3 grams of trans fat and 108 grams of sugar.
The high-calorie beverage has been getting plenty of press, both good and bad. That's good news for brand awareness, according to the company. "We know our guests love bacon," said Jack in the Box spokesperson Golda Akhgarnia. "But this [amount of press] has exceeded our level of expectation."

According to the company's website, Jack in the Box operates out of 2200 locations in 19 US states. But despite the number of locations, not everyone is impressed with the flavor of this bacon-free shake.
Food blog Serious Eats had some harsh words for the new offering, calling it "a new milkshake that will either have you sprinting to the nearest franchise location or recoiling in horror." The review also called the drink an "abomination" and "undrinkable."
The Impulsive Buy, a product review blog, didn't exactly pen a glowing review of the bacon shake, either. Their review included phrases like "Not revolting" and "slightly off-putting." The reviewer was also dismayed that chopped bacon could not be added to the top of the shake by request.
