Los Angeles - British actress Naomi Watts has landed the role of Princess Diana in a new movie to be directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel. The movie focuses on the last two years of Diana's life.
The Daily Telegraph reports that the new movie is to be called “Caught in Flight” and it concerns the romantic affair between Diana, Princess of Wales and the heart surgeon Hasnat Khan (who worked at London’s Royal Brompton Hospital). The affair was conducted in secret from 1995 and until Diana’s death in 1997. The film is to star Naomi Watts as Diana, Princess of Wales.
The website Collider indicates that Watts has been cast to replace the actress originally mooted for the role: Jessica Chastain.
Naomi Watts has appeared in a number of well-regarded film roles, including “King Kong”, “The Ring”, “Funny Games”, “21 Grams” (for which she received an Oscar nomination) and “J Edgar”.
The BBC quotes Watts as saying: “"Princess Diana was loved across the world, and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her on screen.”
The director Oliver Hirschbiegel is perhaps best known for the film about Hitler’s last days, “Downfall”. Total Film quotes the director as saying:
“I am delighted to have such a truly exceptional actress who embodies the warmth, humanity and empathy of such a global icon as Princess Diana."
Previous biopics about Diana have been fairly reverential. It will be interesting to see how a movie which deals directly with an ill-fated love affair, and not the one involving Dodi Fayed, plays out to audiences. Shooting of the production has yet to begin.
