Nairobi - US President Barack Obama’s grandmother sustained injuries from a road accident at a highway in Kisumu, Kenya, during the weekend.
According to Kisumu police boss Musa Kongoli, the vehicle Mama Sarah Obama was using lost control when her driver tried to overtake a speeding vehicle at around 9 p.m. on Saturday.
Kongoli added that Mama Obama was on her way to Siaya, a town in Western Kenya.
Mama Obama, 89, was in the company of her two bodyguards and two other people. The occupants were rushed to Agha Kan Hospital for treatment.
“Mama Obama sustained minor bruises and was in shock on admission at the hospital,” said the hospital’s nursing director Vinodh Krishnankutty.
The five were treated and discharged.
Mama Obama was the second wife of President Obama’s late grandfather. She is the Intergovernmental Institution for the use of Micro-algae Spirulina against Malnutrition’s Goodwill Ambassador for East and Central Africa.
