London - Prince William and Duchess Kate Middleton have welcomed a new addition to their family but it wasn't an heir to the throne that royal watchers are hoping for, it was a puppy.
The royal couple have adopted a black male cocker spaniel puppy that is reported to be just a few months old.
The Telegraph reported the new arrival is expected to be a distraction for Kate during William's six-week tour of duty in the Falkland Islands, where he will continue to serve as a search-and-rescue helicopter pilot.
US Weekly reports the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were initially concerned they weren't ready for pet ownership, but after spending a short time with the puppy he was welcomed as "part of the royal fold."
"The puppy is theirs," said a Palace aide. "He belongs to a litter of cocker spaniels from one of Carole Middleton's friends near home. William and Catherine fell in love with the pup instantly and it wasn't long before they decided to keep him."
The puppy, whose name has not been released, is expected to reside with the newlywed couple at their home near the Royal Air Force base in Anglesey, where William has been stationed for more then a year.
