Las Vegas - Multi-billionaire and real estate mogul Donald Trump is set to announce that he will be endorsing former Massachusetts Governor and 2012 presidential candidate Mitt Romney in Las Vegas on Thursday afternoon.
Throughout Wednesday, there were numerous reports across the media landscape of Donald Trump making an important announcement. Many speculated that he was going to jump into the presidential fold, while others suggested that he may endorse one of the presidential candidates.
CNN has learned that Trump, who has flirted with a presidential run on a few occasions, will endorse 2012 presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Trump is expected to endorse Romney in Las Vegas shortly after noon, two days ahead of the Nevada and Maine caucuses.
A spokesperson for Trump told the New York Times that the Romney campaign would issue an official statement sometime Thursday. “I strongly suggest you be there no matter what.”
Many analysts are calling this move a slap in the face to former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich. The former Georgia Congressman was one of two candidates to confirm their attendance to a debate that was scheduled to be moderated by Trump, but was later cancelled.
During an interview with Fox News, Trump applauded Romney on his last two presidential debates. “I really want to endorse somebody and I'm going to be doing that over the not so distant future, and I'm going to be doing that, and if that person doesn't win, you know, we'll see what happens,” said Trump.
Trump has claimed that some of the biggest issues facing the country are the national debt and trade relations with China. He has also stated that he would have charged Libya for getting rid of Colonel Moammar Gadhafi in exchange for oil. Trump has been a fierce critic of the current Obama administration.
